The strategic region just outside and southeast of Amsterdam is full of military constructions of all ages. From medieval castle and fortified towns to World War II bunkers.
Over the centuries the Dutch also used their old ennemy, the water, as an instrument of deterrence. Miles wide stretches of land around lines of forts and shelters could be flooded. See also route War & Peace.
