windmills on the riverbank

Flour / corn mill "Vriendschap"(Friendship).

Windmill on the banks of the river Vecht in Weesp, just outside Amsterdam. Still in full use for flour production.
With enough wind it can grind with 3 pairs of milling stones simultaneously. That's quite a show ! But in this clip, there is barely enough wind for one set of stones, even with full sails on. On the ground floor of the windmill there's the little shop where I buy the flour for my homebaked bread. More (in Dutch) on the windmill's website : www.weesperwieken.nl Just 50 meters up the river, another windmill : de "Eendragt" (Unity). Built 1691 for grinding grain to supply the local brandy industry, later shell sand production, and finally changed into a sawmill. In use for timber until 1932.
Although the wings can still turn, the machinery has long been removed. The mill is a private house nowadays. More windmills on the countryside video page.
